Air Quality Monitor

Inspired by Purple Air and excited by high-resolution air-quality monitoring, I thought it would be interesting if air quality monitors were built into cars, and the data from each vehicle contributing to a comprehensive air quality map of an area. I prototyped a license plate holder containing air quality sensors and a cellular-enabled microcontroller to send the data remotely.

Air Quality Monitor Specifics

  • Particle Boron microcontroller

  • Combo li-ion charging/powering circuitry (Adafruit part 4755)

  • Grove Adapter for Particle Gen3 or Feather devices

  • Grove Air Quality Sensor

  • Grove (BME280) Temperature and Humidity Sensor

  • Grove 0.96in OLED

  • Cellular LTE antenna

  • GPS Board (Adafruit part 3133)

  • GPS Antenna

All the components were contained inside a license plate “bumper” which provided about 1” of space between the license plate and license plate holder. Data from the monitor was sent to a Google sheet where temperature, air quality, and humidity data could be visualized by GPS coordinate.
